“Driving While Black Records is a Pittsburgh label that celebrates hip hop while calling out the risks of being Black in society.”
Driving While Black Records was founded in 2016 by rapper, activist, and entrepreneur Jordan Montgomery. The record label elevates five emerging, local hip hop artists, including Jordan. The collective uses hip hop to denounce the unfair treatment Blacks face in everyday society. Jordan started rapping when he attend CAPA, a magnet school located in Downtown Pittsburgh. When he was pulled over as a young driver for a questionable traffic stop, he learned first-hand what it meant to ‘drive while black.’ This confrontation sparked his first hip hop album, which called out racism, police brutality, gentrification, and other ills affecting his community. Today, the label provides recording resources, brand management, distribution, and show planning to its young artists. Jordan remains committed to fighting racism while building sales and developing performance opportunities for the collective.
